China has launched a satellite under the auspices of navigating the moon for an eventual manned mission. Of course, Human Rights Groups (what do they know?) are upset because China has two ships and a nuclear submarine communicating with the satellite. The U.S. had a similar "defense" system in development in the 1980s, Star Wars (yes the movie was funded by the Dept. of Defense, sure why not?) Analysts now see the deployment of the satellite as the first step towards a cosmic Chinese knock-off (I'm sure someone said that, it's such an easy joke after all) capable of showering us non-communists with weapony goodness. This is all speculation though as China is more likely to use this as an excuse to build a moonbase, thus ripping off the plot of the second Austin Powers movie. "Laser"
The best part of this story would be to find out the rocket and satellite were covered in lead paint and contained thousands of tiny magnets that toddlers could choke on.

People who think that the satellite is going to rain missiles down upon us lack a basic understanding of physics. Since all our rockets use roughly the same fuel, it takes twice as much fuel to get a rocket into orbit (on a satellite or elsewhere) and then guide it back down as it does to just launch it from the ground. We have Mach 8 missiles (reports of up to Mach 10) that can cross the planet in a matter of minutes. Missiles in space are just plain pointless. Can't be maintained, expensive to put up there, and impractical. But they sure sound cool! And scary.
