Oh Catholic League when will you learn? No one is ever going to take you seriously if you doing stupid shit like this. Say you hate a movie after it comes out at least. Don't protest two months prior. You have no idea what the movie is about just that it is based on a book that dares to say that organized religion is perhaps not always as altruistic as it pretends to be. I get it you don't want the movie to brainwash your children. Instead you prefer to do the brain-washing for them, so that you can be secure in the fact that you didn't waste your life and money in service of a god (lowercase!!! oh no! someone will surely smite me. Oh wait.. no) who doesn't respond to all the worship you give him. I can claim I'm atheist but truthfully I know no more about what is truly binding the universe together than those who claim a higher power. Something balances the universe, not between good and evil, but energy wise. There is a finite amount of energy in the universe and it must have come from somewhere. It's not enough to just say one being of omnipotence created everything, that's too easy an explanation, a cosmic cop-out.
The Catholic League wants the movie banned for its atheistic undertones. However, listen to this quote from an article about the movie's director, Chris Weitz:
"However, Weitz attempted to reassure fans by saying that religion would appear in euphemistic terms. He also indicated that he believes His Dark Materials is 'not an atheistic work, but a highly spiritual and reverent piece of writing'"
So boo on you for stopping spirituality. The argument for religious doctrine when you ask for proof is always faith. So why not have a little faith that there might be a more complete explanation. But bottom-line.... its a movie... based on a book.... a fictional book..... so pull your head out your ass and just don't see it if you want to. I realize that the only fiction you do is the Bible (oh snap! no he didn't) or stupid installments of the "Left Behind Series". I guess if the Catholic League did that they might have to deal with the fact that they have no real power.
